Sybil Przeszlowski, RA

Architect

Colby Co. is a refreshing and amazing place to work. The company has been incredibly flexible to help me find a workload and schedule that allows me to do my job well, and to also be present and available to my family. I have been the recipient of so much support and generosity from my colleagues during a time of personal need, and that support in no small way helped me and my family get through a difficult time. The people who work at Colby Co. are not only smart and capable at what they do, but they are wonderfully kind people who lend a hand when someone is in need, or make themselves available to explain their designs or methods when asked. There is a significant amount of work to do at any given time, but the leadership at Colby Co. manages to balance that with showing that they care and appreciate each of us. The time and care they take to make holiday packages with local treats and plan outdoor adventures and events throughout the year to bring us all together for shared experiences speaks to the firm’s commitment to being a positive place to work. I have made lasting friendships here and have been inspired by how the company treats their employees, their clients and the quality of work that is produced.

Structural Engineer

If you’ve never worked some place where employees are valued more than profits, and satisfied clients are the overarching goal from which the rest of the business naturally follows, it may be hard to relate to why I’m so strongly connected to this team. If you’ve never worked for owners who are more concerned about whether the staff has gotten enough skiing days in over the winter than if their timesheets are turned in, it may be hard to relate to what it’s like working at Colby Co. If you’ve never gotten hired by people that turned into some of your best friends, you may not understand why I can’t imagine working someplace else. The work isn’t always easy. But during challenging times, I know everyone on this team is working towards making sure it gets easier as quickly as possible. When we don’t get it right, we own up to mistakes and correct them as quickly as possible. Accountability, responsiveness, and the willingness to learn from mistakes are perhaps the most remarkable parts of this company. The recognition that none of us can do it on our own, and that our work product is a small piece in helping our clients achieve a larger goal, is what grounds and motivates us.

It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.” – Walt Disney. Colby Co. strives to provide projects that are challenging for both personal and professional growth ensuring there is no mundaneness in everyday work. With all disciplines being in-house, it offers a dynamic and nurturing atmosphere that is incredibly team-oriented, creating a collaborative environment that goes beyond the office walls and the computer screen. With friendly coworkers, dedicated morale officers (dogs), and an air that hums with creative electricity, there is no better place to learn and grow than with the Colby Co. family. “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.” – Winston Churchill. This summarizes the career progression opportunities at Colby Co., where each individual has the freedom to pursue their interests for their career progression. There is no set box or ladder to climb, but rather organic growth based on skill, interest, necessity, and opportunity. A designer can start off as an intern, become a full-time designer/engineer, get licensure, and then may choose to grow into a client or Project Manager, QC/QA Reviewer, or Lead Architect/Designer/Engineer, with the overall choice being theirs.

Let’s talk specifics

Frequently asked questions

At Colby Co., it’s important that we provide everyone with the tools they need to succeed. For us, that means giving people the option of office flexibility. Currently we offer all of our employees the opportunity to work in the office, work from an at-home setup, or a combination of both.

In addition to a comprehensive insurance and retirement benefits package, Colby Co. offers annual bonuses, anniversary bonuses, two paid volunteer days a year, paid educational reimbursement, summer hours, paid time off (PTO), flex time, and company outings. We also provide free parking in downtown Portland for anyone who is working in our office.

Simply put, Maine is amazing! We have mountains and lakes, plenty of beaches, and lots of fun towns and cities to explore! In Portland, you’ll find some of the best food available in the country. We’ve also got plenty of craft breweries, a working waterfront, and lots of places to walk, run, bike, swim, and ski–all within driving distance.

We value the community that we live and work in and we place a major emphasis on giving back to our community in a meaningful way. We do this in several ways, including through a unique partnership with Sebago Lake State Park, where we volunteer multiple days a year to help clean up and prepare the park for all seasonal changes. We support hundreds of local businesses, including when we plan company outings, order meals for the office, and put together staff appreciation gifts. Colby Co. organizes several fundraisers for local nonprofits every year; recipients have included The Opportunity Alliance, Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, Cooking for Community, Maine Needs, Preble Street and The Good Shepherd Food Bank and we also have hosted numerous blood drives at our office. We are always expanding ways in which we can  support our neighbors!

As co-founder Calen Colby often says, “Always say the second thing that comes to your mind and always make sure it’s kind.” We lead our business – both internally and with our clients – with a culture of kindness. Because we offer all of the disciplines in-house, you can always find someone to ask for help or turn to for an answer. Colby Co. makes it a priority to support local businesses and nonprofits, and also supports internal growth and change for all employees.
